Treat the regulator as your first customer
March 2024 · licensing and governance
Regulated ventures usually pitch the market first and meet the regulator last, as a hurdle before launch. That ordering is backwards. The regulator decides whether you get to exist at all, and the scope of your licence is the scope of your product — every feature you promise a customer maps to an obligation you are promising a supervisor.
So treat the regulator the way you would treat a first customer: understand their job, their risk appetite, and what a win looks like from their chair. Bring them evidence on a cadence, the way you would bring traction to an investor — not polished silence followed by a surprise.
The ventures that clear licensing fastest are not the ones with the cleverest lawyers. They are the ones whose founders can explain, in plain language, what could go wrong and what they have built so it doesn't. Substance is a product decision, not a compliance cost.
