The jobs
From committing to an idea, to demand that repeats without heroics.
Product-market fit is pull: retention without persuasion, demand you didn't manufacture.
measured in evidence, not months
Three clusters of work
Learn and validate
the defining job
Name, out loud, the riskiest assumption you're standing on.
Run the cheapest experiment that could kill your biggest assumption.
Kill noise fast — the essence is what survives the evidence.
Talk to users weekly. Listen, don't pitch.
Killing is a verdict the evidence reaches. Quitting is stopping before it does.
Sell for truth before you sell for revenue.
Decide and execute
the engine
One most valuable next action. Singular.
Execute before conviction decays.
Measure user behaviour, not your own activity.
Runway is learning cycles left — not money.
Sustain conviction and relationships
the job nobody writes down
carry the belief
Hold conviction with zero external validation.
A false positive costs more than silence: it recalibrates your sense of remaining distance, wrongly.
protect the self
Separate identity from idea, so the idea can die without taking you with it.
Pace for unknown distance: run like it could end in weeks, structure like it could take years.
Know fear-driven avoidance from legitimate rest.
protect the people
Keep the few who matter genuinely committed, for the full unknowable length of the road.
No customer will ever complain when you miss dinner. This job has no external forcing function — which is exactly why it must be written down.
If a week ends and nothing you learned changes what you do Monday, you weren't learning. You were moving.
The two loops
The engine: decide, execute, measure, decide again.
The shadow: paralysis, then avoidance dressed as progress, then emotional decisions made under pressure, then deeper paralysis.
What flips engine into shadow: assumption debt — open questions stacking faster than you resolve them — and milestone starvation, a road with no natural finish lines.
What flips it back: shrink the next decision until it can survive being wrong, and manufacture honest checkpoints.
Paralysis is a symptom of assumption debt, not a character flaw.
The pains, ranked
01
Learning vs moving
My activity was excellent. My learning was absent.
02
Distance unknown
Every metric measured speed. None measured what was left.
03
The shadow loop
Each emotional decision fed the next paralysis.
04
Alone with the belief
No scoreboard tells you you're sane.
ROOT CONDITION
Clarity of why
With it, everything above is survivable. Without it, everything metastasises.
The jobs are the specification.
