Duct tape is correct during validation: fast, cheap, unashamed. Load-bearing engineering is correct after validation: built to carry the weight the validated numbers require, with a safety factor.

Most expensive failures come from one of two confusions: engineering before validating — polishing something whose biggest assumption is still standing — or hacking long after the evidence demanded better.

The skill is not choosing a mode once. It is knowing, at any moment, which mode the evidence currently requires — and switching without sentimentality when it changes.

There is a 2050 worth building toward. Building is becoming cheap. AI is collapsing the cost of making things — which makes entrepreneurship a common lever for shaping what comes next, and makes what gets built the most consequential open question there is. But cheap building moves the bottleneck. The scarce thing now is knowing what should exist, and knowing honestly whether it is working. That knowing lives — or dies — inside the founder. Entrepreneurship is brutally hard because the founder's jobs are where quests end, not the market's verdict. So I am building against that: launching one hundred companies against the problems worth solving, and open-sourcing nearly three decades of lessons so your mistakes cost less than mine did.
